Supporting Mental Health This May — and Beyond
May is recognised across the UK as a time to focus on mental health and wellbeing, aligning with initiatives like Mental Health Awareness Week. It’s an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how we’re feeling, support one another, and make use of the resources available to help us stay well at work and at home.
Why Mental Health Matters
Mental health is just as important as physical health. It affects how we think, feel, and act — and plays a crucial role in how we handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions. Everyone has mental health, and just like physical health, it can fluctuate over time.
Work can be a positive source of structure, purpose, and connection, but it can also bring pressures. That’s why creating an open, supportive environment is so important.
Wellness Action Plans at Optimise
At Optimise, we’re committed to supporting our people in a practical and meaningful way. One of the tools available to all staff is the Wellness Action Plan (WAP).
A Wellness Action Plan is a simple, personalised document that helps you:
- Identify what keeps you well at work
- Recognise early warning signs if you’re struggling
- Outline what support you might need
- Agree on practical steps with your manager
It’s entirely voluntary and designed to be a positive, proactive conversation — not something to wait for when things become difficult.
How a Wellness Action Plan Can Help
Putting a plan in place can:
- Encourage open communication between you and your manager
- Help prevent small issues from becoming bigger challenges
- Ensure support is tailored to your individual needs
- Give you more confidence in managing your wellbeing at work
Managers can also use these plans to better understand how to support their teams and create a healthier working environment for everyone.
Getting Started
- Speak to your line manager
- Contact HR for guidance
- Access the template via the internal system
Taking this step doesn’t mean something is wrong — it’s about maintaining your wellbeing, just like any other aspect of your health.
A Culture of Support
This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s continue to build a culture where:
- It’s okay to talk about mental health
- People feel supported and listened to
- Wellbeing is part of everyday conversations
If you’re struggling, remember you’re not alone — support is available, and reaching out is a strong and positive step.
Let’s use this month as a reminder to check in with ourselves and each other!
